शृङ्ग्युवाच यद्येतत्साहसं तात यदि वा दुष्कृतं कृतम् प्रियं वाप्यप्रियं वा ते वागुक्ता न मृषा मया
Śṛṅgi said: "O father! Whether my act was rash and improper, whether it brings you pleasure or displeasure, the words that I have spoken will not be in vain.
श्रृंगी ने कहा: "हे पिता! चाहे मेरा कार्य अविवेकपूर्ण और अनुचित हो, चाहे इससे आपको प्रसन्नता हो या अप्रसन्नता, मेरे द्वारा कहे गए शब्द व्यर्थ नहीं होंगे।
O father! It can never be otherwise. I tell that I never lie, even in jest, and certainly not in a curse."
हे पिता! यह कभी भी अन्यथा नहीं हो सकता. मैं कहता हूं कि मैं कभी झूठ नहीं बोलता, यहां तक कि मजाक में भी, और गाली देकर तो बिल्कुल नहीं।"

शमीक उवाच जानाम्युग्रप्रभावं त्वां पुत्र सत्यगिरं तथा नानृतं ह्युक्तपूर्वं ते नैतन्मिथ्या भविष्यति
Śamīka said: "O son! I know that you are greatly powerful and always truthful. You have not uttered a lie in your life. Therefore, this curse of yours will not be false.
शमीक ने कहा: "हे पुत्र! मैं जानता हूं कि तुम बहुत शक्तिशाली हो और हमेशा सच्चे हो। तुमने अपने जीवन में कभी झूठ नहीं बोला है। इसलिए तुम्हारा यह श्राप झूठा नहीं होगा।"
But even if he is grown up, a son must be advised by his father, so that he attains all the good qualities and becomes immensely famous.
लेकिन बड़े होने पर भी बेटे को उसके पिता को सलाह देनी चाहिए, ताकि वह सभी अच्छे गुणों को प्राप्त कर सके और बेहद प्रसिद्ध हो सके।
You are yet a child. Therefore, you need advice muc more. You are always engaged in austerities and the anger of powerful and great-souled ones increases with their powers.
तुम अभी बच्चे हो. इसलिए, आपको सलाह की बहुत अधिक आवश्यकता है। आप सदैव तपस्या में लगे रहते हैं और शक्तिशाली एवं महात्माओं का क्रोध उनकी शक्तियों से बढ़ जाता है।

सोऽहं पश्यामि वक्तव्यं त्वयि धर्मभृतां वर पुत्रत्वं बालतां चैव तवावेक्ष्य च साहसम्
O supreme among those who follow the path of dharma! Seeing that you are my son and witnessing your rashness, I see that I must advise you.
हे धर्म के मार्ग पर चलने वालों में श्रेष्ठ! यह देखते हुए कि तुम मेरे बेटे हो और तुम्हारी उतावलेपन को देखकर, मुझे लगता है कि मुझे तुम्हें सलाह देनी चाहिए।
Live on whatever food can be obtained from the forest and lead a life of tranquillity. Give up your anger. Otherwise, you will not be able to follow the path of dharma.
जंगल से जो कुछ भी भोजन प्राप्त हो सके उसी पर जीवन व्यतीत करें और शांति का जीवन व्यतीत करें। अपना क्रोध त्यागें. अन्यथा आप धर्म के मार्ग पर नहीं चल पाएंगे।

क्रोधो हि धर्मं हरति यतीनां दुःखसंचितम् ततो धर्मविहीनानां गतिरिष्टा न विद्यते
Anger destroys merits that ascetics obtain after a great deal of pain. There is no hope for those who are deprived of merits.
क्रोध उन गुणों को नष्ट कर देता है जो तपस्वियों को अत्यधिक कष्ट के बाद प्राप्त होते हैं। जो लोग गुणों से वंचित हैं उनके लिए कोई आशा नहीं है।
Tranquillity alone gives success to ascetics who are for giving. Good accrues to the for giving, in this world and the next.
शांति ही दान देने वाले तपस्वियों को सफलता प्रदान करती है। इस दुनिया में और अगले में, देने से अच्छा लाभ मिलता है।
Therefore, you must always control your senses and lead a life that is for giving. By being for giving, you will attain worlds that cannot even be reached by Brahmā.
इसलिए, तुम्हें हमेशा अपनी इंद्रियों पर नियंत्रण रखना चाहिए और ऐसा जीवन जीना चाहिए जो देने के लिए हो। देने के पक्ष में होने से, तुम ऐसे लोकों को प्राप्त करोगे जहाँ तक ब्रह्मा भी नहीं पहुँच सकते।
O son! Having achieved tranquillity, I shall do whatever is in my power. I shall send word to the king that he has been cursed by my son,
हे वत्स शांति प्राप्त करने के बाद, मैं वही करूँगा जो मेरी शक्ति में होगा। मैं राजा के पास कहला भेजूंगा कि मेरे पुत्र ने उसे शाप दिया है।
who is yet immature and whose intelligence isn't fully developed and who did this in anger, when he couldn't condone the disrespect shown to me."
जो अभी अपरिपक्व है और जिसकी बुद्धि पूरी तरह से विकसित नहीं हुई है और जिसने गुस्से में ऐसा किया, जब वह मेरे प्रति किए गए अनादर को बर्दाश्त नहीं कर सका।"
Sauti said: After these instructions, driven by compassion, the great ascetic and rigid observer of vows sent a disciple to King Pārīkṣit.
सौती ने कहा: इन निर्देशों के बाद, करुणा से प्रेरित होकर, महान तपस्वी और व्रतों के कठोर पर्यवेक्षक ने एक शिष्य को राजा परीक्षित के पास भेजा।

संदिश्य कुशलप्रश्नं कार्यवृत्तान्तमेव च शिष्यं गौरमुखं नाम शीलवन्तं समाहितम्
His name was Gauramukha and he was austere in his penances and well behaved. The disciple was instructed to first ask about the king's welfare and then come to the real business.
उसका नाम गौरमुख था और वह अपनी तपस्या में तपस्वी तथा अच्छे आचरण वाला था। शिष्य को निर्देश दिया गया कि वह पहले राजा का कुशलक्षेम पूछे और फिर असली बात पर आये।
Going there, he swiftly went to the king, the extender of the Kuru lineage. He entered the king's palace, after first having sent notice through servants.
वहाँ जाकर वह तेजी से कुरु वंश के विस्तारक राजा के पास गया। पहले नौकरों के माध्यम से सूचना भेजकर वह राजा के महल में दाखिल हुआ।
The king received the Brāhmaṇa Gauramukha with due honour. After resting for a while, he told the king, in the presence of his advisers, Śamīka's terrible words, exactly as he had been instructed.
राजा ने उचित सम्मान के साथ ब्राह्मण गौरमुख का स्वागत किया। कुछ देर आराम करने के बाद, उसने राजा को, उसके सलाहकारों की उपस्थिति में, शमिका के भयानक शब्द बताए, जैसा कि उसे निर्देश दिया गया था।
Gauramukha said, "O lord of kings! A riṣi named Śamīka lives in your kingdom. He is extremely virtuous, extremely tranquil, a great ascetic and in control of his senses.
गौरमुख ने कहा, "हे राजाओं के राजा! आपके राज्य में शमीक नाम का एक ऋषि रहता है। वह अत्यंत गुणी, अत्यंत शांत, महान तपस्वी और अपनी इंद्रियों पर नियंत्रण रखने वाला है।
O tiger among men! He was observing a vow of silence when you used the end of your bow to place a dead snake around his shoulders. He himself forgave the act. But his son did not.
हे मनुष्यों में बाघ! जब आपने अपने धनुष की नोक से उसके कंधों पर एक मरा हुआ साँप रख दिया, तब वह मौन व्रत का पालन कर रहा था। उन्होंने स्वयं इस कृत्य को माफ कर दिया। लेकिन उनके बेटे ने ऐसा नहीं किया.
O lord of kings! Without his father's knowledge, you have been cursed by him today. In seven nights, Takṣaka will be the reason for your death.
हे राजाओं के स्वामी! अपने पिता की जानकारी के बिना आज उन्होंने तुम्हें शाप दिया है। सात रातों में तक्षक तुम्हारी मृत्यु का कारण बनेगा।

तत्र रक्षां कुरुष्वेति पुनः पुनरथाब्रवीत् तदन्यथा न शक्यं च कर्तुं केनचिदप्युत
He repeatedly asked his son to save you, but no one can falsify the curse.
उन्होंने अपने पुत्र से बार-बार कहा कि तुम्हें बचा लो, लेकिन श्राप को कोई भी झुठला नहीं सकता।

न हि शक्नोति संयन्तुं पुत्रं कोपसमन्वितम् ततोऽहं प्रेषितस्तेन तव राजन्हितार्थिना
O king! Since he has not been able to pacify his angry son, he has therefore sent me to you for your own welfare."
हे राजा! चूँकि वह अपने रूठे हुए बेटे को मना नहीं सके इसलिए उन्होंने आपकी भलाई के लिए मुझे आपके पास भेजा है।”

इति श्रुत्वा वचो घोरं स राजा कुरुनन्दनः पर्यतप्यत तत्पापं कृत्वा राजा महातपाः
Having heard these terrible words, the king, the descendant of the Kuru lineage and a great ascetic himself, remembered his evil act and the king was struck with remorse.
इन भयानक शब्दों को सुनकर, राजा, कुरु वंश के वंशज और स्वयं एक महान तपस्वी, को अपने बुरे कृत्य की याद आई और राजा को पश्चाताप हुआ।
Having heard that the great hermit in the forest had been under a vow of silence, the king's remorse increased even more.
यह सुनकर कि जंगल में महान साधु ने मौन व्रत धारण कर लिया है, राजा का पश्चाताप और भी बढ़ गया।
On learning about the great compassion Śamīka had shown for him and recollecting his sinful act towards the hermit, the king was even more miserable.
शमिका द्वारा उसके प्रति दिखाई गई महान दया के बारे में जानने और साधु के प्रति अपने पापपूर्ण कृत्य को याद करने पर, राजा और भी अधिक दुखी हुआ।

न हि मृत्युं तथा राजा श्रुत्वा वै सोऽन्वतप्यत अशोचदमरप्रख्यो यथा कृत्वेह कर्म तत्
The king did not grieve about his impending death. But like a god, he grieved over the act he had perpetrated.
राजा को अपनी आसन्न मृत्यु का शोक नहीं हुआ। लेकिन एक देवता की तरह, उसने अपने कृत्य पर दुःख व्यक्त किया।
The king then sent Gauramukha away, with the message that the illustrious one should show him mercy.
तब राजा ने गौरमुख को यह संदेश देकर विदा किया कि उस महामहिम को उस पर दया करनी चाहिए।
When Gauramukha had departed, the anxious king immediately sought the advice of his ministers.
जब गौरमुख चला गया, तो चिंतित राजा ने तुरंत अपने मंत्रियों से सलाह मांगी।
Having consulted his advisers, the king, who was wise in counsel himself, instructed that a palace be erected on pillars and guarded day and night.
अपने सलाहकारों से सलाह लेने के बाद, राजा ने, जो खुद भी बुद्धिमान था, निर्देश दिया कि खंभों पर एक महल खड़ा किया जाए और दिन-रात उसकी रक्षा की जाए।

रक्षां च विदधे तत्र भिषजश्चौषधानि च ब्राह्मणान्सिद्धमन्त्रांश्च सर्वतो वै न्यवेशयत्
For protection, he placed all around the palace physicians, medicines and Brāhmana-s who were skilled in the use of mantra-s.
सुरक्षा के लिए, उसने महल के चारों ओर चिकित्सकों, औषधियों और ब्राह्मणों को तैनात किया जो मंत्र-विद्या के उपयोग में कुशल थे।
Thus protected on all sides and surrounded by his virtuous ministers, the king continued with his royal duties.
इस प्रकार सभी ओर से सुरक्षित और अपने गुणी मंत्रियों से घिरा हुआ, राजा अपने शाही कर्तव्यों का पालन करता रहा।
He had heard what had happened and that Takṣaka, supreme among the snakes, would send the king to Yāma's abode. He thought
उसने सुना था कि क्या हुआ था और साँपों में सर्वश्रेष्ठ तक्षक, राजा को यम के निवास पर भेज देगा। उसने सोचा
"I will cure the king of his fever when he has been bitten by the best of snakes. Through this, I will gain wealth and virtue."
"जब राजा को सर्वश्रेष्ठ साँपों ने काटा होगा तो मैं उसके बुखार को ठीक कर दूँगा। इससे मुझे धन और पुण्य की प्राप्ति होगी।"
Takṣaka, the king of snakes, saw Kāśyapa on the way, single-minded in his desire. He appeared before him in the disguise of an old Brāhmaṇa.
साँपों के राजा तक्षक ने रास्ते में कश्यप को अपनी इच्छा में एकचित्त देखा। वह एक बूढ़े ब्राह्मण के भेष में उनके सामने प्रकट हुए।
Then the king of snakes spoke to Kāśyapa, a bull among sages." Where are you going so swiftly? What is the act you wish to accomplish?"
तब साँपों के राजा ने ऋषियों के बीच एक बैल कश्यप से कहा। "आप इतनी तेज़ी से कहाँ जा रहे हैं? आप कौन सा कार्य पूरा करना चाहते हैं?"
Kāśyapa replied: "Today, Takṣaka, the best of the snakes, will use his energy to set on fire the invincible King Parkishit of the Kuru lineage.
कश्यप ने उत्तर दिया: "आज, साँपों में सर्वश्रेष्ठ, तक्षक, अपनी ऊर्जा का उपयोग कुरु वंश के अजेय राजा पार्किशिट को आग लगाने के लिए करेगा।
O amiable one! The king of snakes is as powerful as Agni in his energy. I am rushing there today to cure the fever of the king of unlimited energy, who was born in Pāṇḍu's illustrious lineage."
हे मिलनसार! साँपों का राजा अपनी ऊर्जा में अग्नि के समान शक्तिशाली है। मैं आज पांडु के प्रसिद्ध वंश में पैदा हुए असीमित ऊर्जा के राजा के बुखार को ठीक करने के लिए वहां जा रहा हूं।

तक्षक उवाच अहं स तक्षको ब्रह्मंस्तं धक्ष्यामि महीपतिम् निवर्तस्व न शक्तस्त्वं मया दष्टं चिकित्सितुम्
Takṣaka said: "O Brāhmaṇa! I am that Takṣaka, who will set the ruler of the earth on fire. Turn back. You cannot cure someone who has been bitten by me."
तक्षक ने कहा: "हे ब्राह्मण! मैं वह तक्षक हूं, जो पृथ्वी के शासक को आग लगा देगा। पीछे लौट जाओ। जिसे मैंने काटा है उसे तुम ठीक नहीं कर सकते।"
Kāśyapa replied: "O snake! I will go to the king and cure him of his fever when you have bitten him. That I know. I have the power of intelligence and knowledge."
कश्यप ने उत्तर दिया: "हे साँप! जब तुमने राजा को काटा है तो मैं उसके पास जाऊंगा और उसका बुखार ठीक कर दूंगा। यह मैं जानता हूं। मेरे पास बुद्धि और ज्ञान की शक्ति है।"
